Politician Chilufya Tayali has lamented the jailing of a youngman who stole $200 from ex-presidential aide turned lawyer Dickson Jere.
CHILUFYA TAYALI WRITES
Dickson Jere is a very good friend and I wish I would not have to write this here, however, I don’t want to betray my ethos to stand with the poor and the underprivileged. I am deeply touched that Dickson Jere sent a poor boy to jail for stealing $200, half of which was recovered.
Please make no mistake to think that, I am supporting criminality, nor am I giving poverty as an excuse to steal, but I am talking about MERCY, FORGIVENESS, CONSIDERATION AND GENEROSITY.
Of course we all react differently when something happens, and I am not judging Dickson Jere, but if I were in his position, I would not have sent the boy to jail, especially that this boy does not seem to be a hardcore criminal.
This is not a boy, who breaks a car to steal, he just took advantage of the situation. It also appears that he showed remorse by admitting that, he got the money. Surely this is not the kind of person to send to jail.
If I was in Dickson Jere’s position I would have withdrawn the case before the this guy was sent to jail. I don’t know if Dickson Jere has never taken advantage of a situation like this boy for much more money than a $100.
I am deeply broken to read this. I hope Dickson Jere will take it upon himself to continue visiting this guy whilst in Jail and help him when he comes out of jail, otherwise, this guy could come out worse than he has gone in.
MAY THE LORD HAVE MERCY ON US FOR NEGLECTING AND ABUSING THE POOR.
