The Lusaka City Council has summoned Charles Mahasa, a landlord in Lusaka’s Garden Compound who has six flats housing 23 individuals with only one toilet, has been summoned for reckless disposal of fecal matter.
This took place when a team of Lusaka City Council under the public health department pounced on the man who has been decanting sewer effluent in Lusaka’s garden compound Ngwerere ward 19.
Earlier this week, Phoenix News uncovered a scenario in which the said man was disposing off fecal matter from a septic tank and decanting it into a shallow well which raised several complaints from the public as the place was inhabitable and posed a serious health hazard to the public.
The residents have complained that the disposal of sewer wastes is posing a threat to their health and they are now living in fear of waterborne diseases outbreak in the area.
However, the Lusaka City Council Public Relations Manager George Sichimba has called on the public to maintain high levels of hygiene and ensure those putting up flats construct adequate toilets for all households.
