Mother Narrates Challenge Of Look After Lead Victim

A mother of Kabwe has narrated how it has been a challenge for her to look after her 11 year old daughter who is a victim of lead contamination at the defunct Kabwe mine.

Speaking when she featured on the Phoenix FM breakfast show’s “THE PULSE SEGMENT” Gertrude Sakala explained that in 2012, she observed that her daughter started developing red lips and after medical examination, she was found to have had up to level five of lead contamination in her body.

Ms Sakala has complained that it has been tough to look after her daughter especially that Makululu clinic which has been providing the needed food such as milk and soya beans to treat her daughter’s ailment has reduced supply and now fends for herself.

A recently published 88-page report by human rights watch has revealed that lead exposure around the former lead and zinc mine in Kabwe is having disastrous effects on children’s health.

The report dubbed “we have to be worried: the impact of lead contamination on children’s rights in Kabwe, Zambia”, has since urged government to promptly clean up the contamination and ensure proper treatment for all who need it.
