The Zambia National Farmers Union –ZNFU has described as timely government’s ban on maize and mealie meal export.
ZNFU dpokesperson Kelvin Kaleyi says the move is important because the nation cannot be guaranteed of a bumper harvest.
Kaleyi says the poor rainfall experienced has affected crop production in the southern part of the country.
But Grain Traders Association of Zambia, Executive Director Chambuleni Simwinga says government should have allowed the exports of until the next crop focus survey.
Government has imposed an interim restriction to safeguard the nation’s food security as the country awaits the results of the 2018/2019 crop forecast survey.
