Mwaliteta May Be Jailed For 7 Years

Police have charged and arrested United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka Province Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta for alleged possession of offensive weapons which carries seven years in jail when convicted.

The charge is under Section 85 sub section One of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia. 

Mwaliteta is charged together with James Sichilongo.

They are scheduled to appear in court today. This is according to Acting Police Spokesperson Danny Mwale.

In 2016, Mwaliteta was arrested and detained on similar grounds but his case was a few months later dismissed.

Meanwhile, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema & other opposition party supporters have arrived at the Lusaka magistrates’ court where Mwaliteta is scheduled to appear on allegations of possession of offensive weapons.

Mwaliteta was arrested on March 27 in Kafue on election day for the district council chairperson.
